Artist Appreciation: Islay's Terrace

What's "Islay’s Terrace?" The shop name is inspired by my darling three-legged cat, Islay (pronounced eye-lah), who is named after a Scottish island. Islay overseas all creations here on The Terrace, which is also well stocked with cat toys so she’s constantly entertained and knows to keep her feisty little paws off my real craft materials and products.
All items created by me with love and care in my home studio.
I have always been craft-obsessed. I blame my mother. She’s the one who handed me my first puffy paints and told me to get busy. And get busy I did! I hand-craft each item with lots of love here in my studio. Each piece is unique and has its own personality.
5 fun facts about the brains behind the operations here at Islay’s Terrace. (That’s me!)

1. My shop name is inspired by the name of my cat -- Islay (pronounced Eye-lah.) She’s a Russian Blue, so sort of smoky gray colored. She’s named after a Scottish island that is famous for very smoky scotch. She's the perfect studio assistant, which means she likes to nap while I'm working. (Also, she only has 3 legs.)

2. I love craft supplies. LOVE them! I could spend hours in a craft store. It’s dangerous. I also love vintage items, history, and retro styles. I try to work them into my creations whenever I can.

3. I own my grandmother’s sewing machine – though I currently sew on a newer machine that my mother gave me.

4. I have a master’s degree in creative writing. When I’m not crafting you can find me writing books for teens and young readers.

5. I love learning new crafts. I can spend hours browsing the craft book section of the library or bookstore – and I’ll likely walk away with a new book and new ideas. My fingers are always busy. When I’m on the couch I’m always doing something crafty like knitting or embroidering.

Isn't this shop just beautiful? I love the variety. And I can totally relate to having a dangerous love of craft supplies!

Artist Appreciation: Memories for Life

Hi, I'm Edi, owner of Memories for Life. My shop is all about personalized and customized items for you and your loved ones. I make laser engraved wooden items, etched glass items and custom name scrapbooks.

I started selling on Etsy in 2008 with my paper goods items. I made greeting cards and different styles of scrapbooks. Over the years, my business has evolved into more wood and glass items. After purchasing a laser engraver in 2011, my whole life changed. This machine allowed me to quit my job and run my business full-time!

My favorite part about running my business is the creative process. The wheels in my brain never stop turning and I'm always coming up with new ideas. Seeing new creations come to life is the best part of my job!

I feel what makes my shop unique is the fact that I can personalize and customize any item. Many of the items in my shop came from special requests. I love putting together something truly original for each of my customers.

Thanks Edi! I absolutely love this shop and especially the unique quality that engraving brings to wood. My favorite item is the diamond ring, but I also love the wedding guest books! What is your favorite item?

Psssst...

Artist Appreciation: Papoose Clothing

Hi everyone! I would like to introduce you to a friend of mine; Ashley of Papoose Clothing!
My name is Ashley Duggan-Smith, and I am the resident owner, designer, maker, and crazy cat lady at Papoose Clothing. I learned how to sew at a young age when my mom taught me while making a pillow for me bed. I was so afraid of running the needle through my finger, but I finished the pillow without any mishaps. I furthered my sewing skills while taking several costume construction classes for my degree in Theatre, but it wasn’t until my niece’s birth three years ago that I began to really take myself seriously. I fell in love with designing and creating clothes for her to wear that I couldn’t stop and decided to see if I could make something out of what began as a hobby of mine.

I first started out without any clear direction of where I wanted to go or what I really wanted my business to stand for. It’s taken awhile, but I am so much more focused now on my vision and have a clearer sense of what my style is. I love reading and creating and all kinds of art forms, I think it is so important to foster a child’s imagination, and my clothing is definitely geared towards encouraging play and make believe through whimsical, storybook styles.

My favorite part of the creative process is being able to work with moms on custom orders. People come to me for something different and inspired, something based on a small idea that is then turned into an imaginative item parents and their kids can be excited about. I love thinking outside the box and not following strict lines, especially with fairytale costumes that can be worn for play and everyday wear. It’s thrilling to have only an idea to go off of then make something tangible from it that never existed before.

Right now I am hard at work with the upcoming Spring Summer 2013 collection. I don’t want to reveal too much, but I am so passionate about this collection. It definitely represents me so much more as a person than previous ones, and it has been incredibly fun researching and digging deeper into my history to clearly and artistically represent this idea in a collection of children’s clothing. Like any other design, it begins with a simply idea, but with an entire collection, it’s on a much grander scale. Pieces must compliment but differ slightly, and it is important to me that a meaningful story is told. I have finalized the designs and fabric choices, so construction is next. I plan on revealing bits and pieces as I go along on my blog (www.papooseclothing.blogspot.com) to keep things exciting!

Thanks so much for sharing your shop with us Ashley! I think Lila would just look darling in all of those precious dresses. I especially love the Cats and Dogs dress!
